Introduction The practice of students in higher education providing support for each other is far from new and is firmly rooted in the concept of collegiality to which the origins of higher education can be traced. The development of formal mechanisms of student peer support may be seen as a creative response to a rapidly changing environment which has the potential to bring practical benefits to all parties involved: the supporters, the supported, and those with a formal responsibility to enSure that learning occurs.
