Sports facility managementopoly

Sport, recreation and leisure is now very big business in the UK, employing some 1.6 million people and accounting for £25.6 billion or 4 per cent of the gross domestic product (Buswell, 1993). The National Lottery spent £336 million on sport in its first year (Department of National Heritage, 1996); professionalism, sponsorship, the media and the govemmenl's initiatives in Sport: Raising the Game (Department of National Heritage, 1995) further highlight the increased role and profile of sport in the I 990s. These factors, coupled with increasingly expectant and educated consumers and quality competition of sports facilities/acti vities, reaffirm the necessity for appropriately qualified managers and staff to provide an efficient and effective service.
