ABSTRACT

A learning city transforms the city into a modern centre of learning by the effective use of the new learning technologies. While computers may be important for open learning, they are not the only items of technology in education. Classroom practice remains much the same, embedded in out-of-date constructs and teaching, rather than progressing to learning-based techniques. The digital revolution offers a much greater opportunity to Learning Cities. When the focus is on the needs of the learner, learning becomes at worst an equal partnership between them, and at best a means of passing on ownership of content and method to the customer. Teachers can use a simple channel changer in their classrooms to display everything from newspaper articles and educational graphics to films and, in the case of Westfield, live programming via satellite.
