ABSTRACT
A learning city energizes programmes, which enable all citizens to take positive action to care for the environment. Supra-national governmental organizations are well aware that environmental matters are not just important; they are a potential threat to continued survival on the planet. A poster contest on environmental pollution allowed individuals and groups to increase awareness in the school and the neighbourhood by designing posters to illustrate its effects on people. National and international links would bring in new learning and opportunities for useful and fascinating collaborative work. They could also provide the basis for a constantly updated local environmental database not only giving information to local officials but usable by schoolchildren and other members of the public as well. The students also gave a performance on an environmental issue at the municipal theatre which was attended by many students from the city and their parents.
