ABSTRACT

This chapter presents five case studies of lifelong learning initiatives developed in Kent. It focuses on the daily challenges faced by the many people, from a variety of public, private and voluntary sector organizations, who have worked to deliver the objectives of the ‘cradle to grave’ regional learning strategy. The chapter provides background information on Kent, and gives an overview of the Kent Learning strategy. Kent has pioneered the development of Individual Learning Accounts, by devising account systems and learner support infrastructure. With sponsorship by Kent training & enterprise council, the growing network has provided access to learning to several thousand non-learners in a non-traditional, community-based setting. In 1998, the partners to Kent Learning and Kent Prospects commissioned the consultants Ernst & Young to assess the impact of the strategies to date.
