ABSTRACT

The first set of lifelong learning insights deals with the effects of the change towards learning as the major focus for educational, and indeed many others, activities. The lifelong learning focus is on learning and the needs and requirements of learners. The sector which has seen the most quantitative and qualitative increase both in active learning and in the number of people participating in it, can be found in business and industry, as a strategic thrust into the development of employees’ capacity to learn. Many industry education departments, led by cost-efficiency considerations, demonstrate a strong interest in the psychology of learning and its translation into new educational methods, and they devise ways of putting these into practice. Teachers would become ‘learning counsellors’, with a knowledge of all aspects of educational approaches including the use of learning technologies, the development of leadership skills and a knowledge of the tools and techniques of lifelong learning.
