ABSTRACT

There are typically five reasons for testing or assessing learners. The first is to identify or diagnose their strengths and weaknesses. The second is to determine what has or has not been learned during instruction and, based on what is found, to prescribe something for the learner. The third reason is to assess individual performance in order to assign a grade, the fourth reason is to evaluate the quality of the unit of instruction and the final reason is to evaluate the learning materials.

This chapter reviews the development of both subjective and objective test items.
