ABSTRACT

Working models, often of human beings and animals, have throughout history been used to amaze, frighten and educate. Today automata have evolved into a sophisticated and entertaining kinetic art form with the potential to stimulate a mixture of human senses.

In this chapter, the author has used projects involving the design and construction of kinetic sculpture and ‘moving toys’ to introduce design students and groups of art teachers on in-service training courses to the principles of mechanics and motion. Additionally it has been found that these topics are excellent as a vehicle for the introduction of problem-based learning (PBL).

Although presented with a focus on technology, the principles illustrated in this chapter are widely transferable as the focus of the author’s work is primarily concerned with the removal of the fear associated with the unfamiliar.
