ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews a change of teaching a particular unit within a UK school of business. The original delivery was through traditional lectures and seminars. The new approach places more emphasis on experiential learning and mentoring; this has resulted in increased student enjoyment.

The chapter describes the development of the unit and the philosophy behind the components, how these were produced and the operation of the unit in practice.

An aim of the new unit is to encourage students to learn more effectively by developing their own learning skills. The unit simulates the decision-making process and includes a model that generates the effects of decisions taken. The unit requires students to learn in a small group environment, where they help each other achieve the learning outcomes. The unit is based on established learning theories.

The impetus for the redesign came partly from recognition of resource constraints on teaching, but mainly from the author’s interest in questioning the students’ learning processes.
