ABSTRACT

Most students enrolled in the Introduction to Health Studies course at Brock University are not interested in the course materials. For the past three years, the professor (author) teaching this course has modified the presentation of material and structure of the assignments in an effort to better engage the uninspired student.

Strategies adopted include:

applying the materials to the students’ own experience;

devising assignments to develop transferable skills;

presenting material using a variety of methods.

Success in applying such new strategies has been noted in improved course evaluations and overall satisfaction among students enrolled in the course.
