ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the use of a computer-based business simulation or ‘game’ in the teaching of computing and information systems to business students. The main interests of such students are generally in such areas as marketing, personnel management and finance.

The simulation described was developed to provide an engaging and integrating learning experience for students while at the same time meeting the primary module objective: facilitating the attainment of computing and information management skills and knowledge.

An evaluation of the simulation, based upon focus group interviews with students, has been conducted to explore its perceived value as a learning tool. Findings indicate that the module is broadly successful in achieving its aims, although some areas for future development are revealed. Equally importantly, the game engages the attention of the students, whatever their main subject interest.
