ABSTRACT

This chapter is rather more wide-ranging than previous ones. In it, I attempt to make the link between some recent developments in new information and communication technologies (ICT) for learning and their possible use in cooperative learning situations. Advanced learning technologies and electronic networks are becoming established 'tools' and methods of communication in many areas of higher education (see eg Mason and Kaye, 1989; Mason, 1989a; McConnell, 1990; Harasim, 1993; Harasim et al., 1995; Verdejo, 1994; Collis, 1996; Banks, Graebner and McConnell, 1998). Although their use for computer supported cooperative learning may not always be very significant, the technological infrastructure needed to support cooperative learning is in place. What might be lacking is an understanding of the educational and training benefits of CSCL, and an awareness of how to implement cooperative learning strategies using these new technologies.
