ABSTRACT

In the next two chapters we are going to deal with three interrelated ideas – meaning, wisdom and spirituality. All three of these terms have religious connotations, as we shall show below, and they clearly overlap with each other so that any division can only be for heuristic purposes. Meaning here refers to answers to ontological questions of the human condition and so it is a metaphysical, philosophical or theological term. Wisdom relates to understanding everyday life, although it is often seen as a religious term, since the concept occurs frequently in the Bible (Young, 1999). Spirituality, which will be discussed in the next chapter, refers to a specifically non-material domain of human being that in some ways transcends the cognitive.
