ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the challenging issue of dealing with pupil misbehaviour. It should not be considered as isolated in any way from earlier discussions of planning, organization and teaching. These different features are inextricably linked: learning and teaching are premised on appropriate pupil behaviour; good behaviour is most likely to arise in the context of effective teaching strategies. Problems with discipline and control are matters of particular concern for trainee and inexperienced teachers, and so it is necessary for them to be familiar with a range of approaches for dealing with both minor and more serious difficulties. Objectives

be aware of the types of misbehaviour likely to occur during physical education lessons;

understand possible causes of such misbehaviour;

be familiar with strategies for dealing with both minor and major incidents of misbehaviour.
