ABSTRACT

In this chapter the author reports on teachers at Lahti Polytechnic in Finland moving from traditional delivery methods towards online learning. The findings of teacher effectiveness research seem to be twofold. The challenges for education arise from the changes in the working life and society, and these changes should be reflected in teaching as well. Students process new information and form new meanings and knowledge structures. Teachers' high expectations are reflected, not just in the tasks they give to students, but also in the way they communicate with their students. In the University of Turku they have developed a Web-based WorkMates program, which offers students and teachers a common forum for presenting their own material and for working together to produce documents. Students process new information and form new meanings and knowledge structures. The project was partly funded by the European Social Fund, and aimed at staff development of local small and medium size companies via new technologies.
