ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author draws on his experience as an academic and a commercial producer of online materials to take the reader through the issues that have to be addressed when converting raw content into useful online learning and the commercial judgements that have to be made. Learners also have new roles and responsibilities as managers of their own learning. The exercise is self-contained and complete, with limited opportunity or need for learners to manage their learning. In some circumstances the design team takes a deliberate decision to exclude the need for tutorial support or for learners to manage their learning. Too much freedom creates insecurity in the learner and inhibits learning; too little frustrates the learner. A slightly enhanced version with limited interactions was written using HTML and reflected an elementary computer-based learning approach. The learner is also able to exert significant control over the sequencing of activities.
