Background In 1996, several faculty members at a medium-sized, graduate degree granting university in the United States created an institute (the Institute for Instructional Innovation) whose major goal is to encourage faculty to adopt active group learning strategies such as PBL in their undergraduate courses. Two week-long series of workshops led by the Institute founders inform and guide the faculty participants (Institute Fellows) as they learn how to implement these strategies in their own classrooms.
