ABSTRACT

This chapter provides new heads of departments and managers with an overview of essential information on managing human resources (HR). It consists essentially of specially commissioned expert commentary written by leading HR professionals working across the higher education sector. The chapter addresses the strategic and operational aspects of HR management. To be effective, the manager must operate institutional procedures which will increasingly be brought together within the framework of an HR strategy. Heads will also need to work closely with the HR professionals within the institution, to ensure that their own practices are fair and non-discriminatory, and that their actions will not lead to legal problems. It is important for the manager not to underestimate the time that can be spent on this aspect of the role. Institutions will have policy statements on harassment and bullying, and it is the responsibility of the head to ensure compliance.
