ABSTRACT

Assuming that the position of the ship is known at some particular time and that the course and speed/ distance made good are also accurately known, then the new position of the ship can be determined. Unfortunately, the course and distance measuring sensors are insufficiently accurate to allow implicit reliance to be placed on this new position. Bearing in mind that the initial position could also be in doubt, this method of navigation should be used only as a back-up and check on more precise position determination or in the absence of other systems.
