Fungal infections, including moulds, are initiated by the germination of air-borne spores which are always present in enormous numbers and variety in the atmosphere. Two factors are necessary for successful germination and subsequent growth of these spores:
The presence of organic material to act as a nutrient source.
A supply of moisture.
