ABSTRACT

Consider a pendulum bob swinging to and fro. Figure 7.1 shows the arrangement. The bob swings through an arc from position 1 at height ‘a’ to position 2 at height ‘b’ and back. Energy is lost during each half-swing and the amplitude of that swing becomes progressively smaller than the one before. Its return swing is to position 3, then to position 4 and so on. The pendulum will eventually come to a standstill at its rest position.
