The Effective Early Learning Project and the National Curriculum
In the scope of this chapter I shall ask some basic questions about how we might define the concept of curriculum in the earIy years, and ask whether a curriculum is necessary for these children. I shall examine current initiatives to develop an appropriate curriculum for children from 3 to 5 years of age and raise issues of continuity and progression with the National Curriculum in relation to these initiatives. The aims and scope of the EEL project will then be described, and the model of curriculum evaluation employed in the project will be outlined. Finally, I shall raise the question of what kind of approach to the curriculum for under-5s is required.
