Modelling Community Work: An Analytic Framework for Practice

Rothman's identification of three models of community organisation practice has permeated the community work literature on both sides of the Atlantic. Whatever the subsequent critique, locality development (which in the U.K. is commonly referred to as community development in recognition that 'community' is a more multi-dimensional concept than 'locality' implies), social action and social planning are the common starting points. Yet ironically the purpose, and for me the core feature of Rothman's analysis, is largely overlooked in the literature.
