Case Management in AIDS Service Settings
Pages 14

Integrating risk assessment for HIV into social work practice in mental health settings is consistent with the goal of enhancing our client's well being. The social worker must be familiar with the range of human sexual behavior, including specific activities and sexual orientations. A history of trauma can deeply effect one's current sexual functioning. Denial or repression is a common coping mechanism. The social worker/therapist needs to know how to assess suicidality and homicidality and consider in what ways unsafe sexual practices might constitute suicidal and/or homicidal behavior. Social workers may be vulnerable to suits claiming both failure to disclose confidential information to protect third parties and inappropriate or unauthorized disclosure of confidential information. Lou might also benefit from a psychotherapy group with other gay men in which he could learn new ways to develop relationships and how to relate to men in a variety of ways.
