Each Thanksgiving moumers gather at Plymouth Rock. Twentynine years, not one Thanksgiving missed. Indians hold this National Day of Mourning because European colonists stole land and murdered millions. Because current conditions facing indigenous peoples are atrocious. Because genocide isn't easily forgotten. Speeches, marches, protest actions: one year they buried Plymouth Rock; one year someone, who knows who, painted it blood red. In 1997, the year I tried to go but failed, the blood was real.
