Principles of Good Staff Selection
Tom Peter’s (1988) first rule for recruitment and interviewing is “spend time and lots of it” (p. 379). All the knowledge of good practice and technique will be of little value if the time and attention to the task is in sufficient for the various tasks of staff selection to be carried out thor oughly. Participants in the focus groups also made this point. Two to three months is needed to undertake a thorough selection from the time the job is reviewed and advertised until the time the appointee com mences work (Victorian Council of Social Service, 1993).
