ABSTRACT

Several herbal medications have been used historically to relieve the symptoms of mental disorders. Drug treatment of mental illnesses really didn’t become effective on a wide scale until the twentieth century, and many of the historical uses of plant drugs for this purpose are considered impractical by today’s standards. For example, Sigmund Freud, the creator of psychoanalysis, advocated the use of cocaine to alleviate depression. Cannabis and opium were also used historically to treat agitation.
