ABSTRACT

Numerous possible and probable cases of dissociative schizophrenia can be found in the psychiatric literature, including cases described by in their Studies on Hysteria. The point of this chapter is to provide additional case material that will help the reader make a gestalt switch from the endogenous biomedical paradigm of schizophrenia to the model proposed here. The journal Schizophrenia Bulletin contains a section called First Person Account. The purpose of the section is to educate professional readers about the issues and difficulties confronted by consumers of mental health care. This first-person account emphasizes the negative effects of treatment based on the biological disease model of schizophrenia. There is also a concept in psychiatry called the least restrictive level of care. This principle is advocated by managed care companies because it reduces costs, but it is also ethical, humane, and good clinical practice.
