ABSTRACT

While preparing to write this chapter, I reviewed treatment guidelines for schizophrenia prepared by the American Psychiatric Association (Herz et al., 1997), the Patient Outcomes Research Team (PORT) (Dixon and Lehman, 1995; Lehman, 1995; Lehman and Steinwachs, 1998; Lehman, Carpenter, et al., 1995; Lehman, Thompson, et al., 1995; Scott and Dixon, 1995a, b), the Expert Consensus Panel for Schizophrenia (McEvoy, Scheifler, and Frances, 1999), and the Texas Medication Algorithm Project (Miller et al., 1999). As well, I read reviews of these guidelines by Smith and Docherty (1998) and Milner and Valenstein (2002), and reviews of the literature on psychotherapy of schizophrenia by Carpenter (1984), Feinsilver and Gunderson (1972), and Fenton (2000). These materials summarize the thinking of the past three decades.
