These days almost every apartment or house has a thermostat. It controls the heater and the air conditioner. You set it for the temperature you want and it tries to keep the temperature near that. Inside it has a thermometer that measures the room temperature. It compares that with its goal, the temperature you set. If the room temperature does not match the goal, the thermostat turns on the right equipment to correct things. This pattern is shown as a flow diagram in Fig. 5.1.
