ABSTRACT

Higher education is defined as a specific category in the tertiary phase of education consisting of educational institutions that make the highest demands on students concerning ability, motivation, prerequisite knowledge and skills, and perseverance. University education, higher vocational education, and open university education belong to higher education. A lot of people are involved in the endeavor of higher education: students, teachers, researchers, administrators, counselors, instructional designers, evaluators, tuition-paying parents, and so on. We first concentrate on, in our opinion, the most important participants: students and teachers, and introduce them in a case to illustrate the problems for which instructional design must find solutions.
