ABSTRACT

The greatest wave of immigration since the turn of the century, combined with escalating birth rates, is creating a society with no distinct majority—one characterized by multicultural enclaves in many cities and rural areas. The program presents a general overview of cultural learning styles and strategies that support them. The learning that takes place — whether it is in cultural understanding, human relations, or anti-racism — is disembodied and easily forgotten. Teachers have gained an awareness of how teacher expectations influence student achievement, and they are learning strategies for cooperative learning and conflict resolution. Information in the case is supplemented by other curriculum materials, e.g., a model that offers specific steps for handling disruptive classroom behavior or training in cooperative learning strategies. The case, in other words, functions as the hub of the staff development wheel. The following cases are part of a nationwide case development momentum.
