What does it mean to understand and explain the process of acquisition of a second language from a variationist perspective? In the field of second-language acquisition (SLA), there would appear to be multiple research approaches, and different approaches have different notions of what it means to understand and explain the process of acquisition. What does it mean, then, to take a variationist perspective as opposed to some other perspective?
