ABSTRACT

Eagerness and energy describe the third graders participating in a literature response group using novels. This chapter discusses the experiences of a resource teacher who provides for the needs of advanced learners. It identifies key sources and provides provocative questions and helpful ideas. The heart of the chapter, however, is the representation of the students’ discussions. They portray what situations and characters third-grade readers react to, and what they think and feel about them. The discussions also exemplify a range of teacher questions, catalytic and probing questions, to promote student interaction without dominating it or being directive. Among the principles of response discussion that are illustrated are Socratic questioning, guide-on-the-side, metacognition, predicting, and relevance.
