ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the Jasper series from the perspective of philosophies of curriculum design. Jasper is designed to encourage sustained thinking about authentic problems. Its close cousins are case-based learning (e.g., Gragg, 1940; Hallinger, Leithwood, & Murphy, 1993); problem-based learning (e.g., Barrows, 1985; Duffy, Lowyck, &Jonassen, 1993); and project-based learning (e.g., Collins, Hawkins, & Carver, 1991; Dewey, 1933). These approaches to curriculum design are different from many others; for example, the design of general thinking skills curricula and the design of typical textbooks with applications problems at the end of each chapter. We discuss each of these next.
