ABSTRACT

In the current postmodern moment Cornel West, amongst others, has argued that those artists&critics who align themselves with demoralized, demobilized, depoliticized, and disorganized people as "organic intellectuals" in order to empower and enable social action, find themselves in an oxymoronic position. On the surface the rhetoric sounded fine, but beneath this rhetoric lay the eventual demise of fine-art programs in schools as they were to become absorbed into "core" subjects losing their toehold. It is common knowledge amongst sociologists of art that works of art during this time were utilized primarily for their ideological content. Eventually the quadrivium was added to the trivium, founding the seven liberal arts—the ground upon which the University stood for; the faculty of arts and sciences. Giotto represents the paradigmatic artist who begins to introduce a coherence to the Biblical narrative by representing the story within the confines of a perspectival frame.
