ABSTRACT

During the course of my research for this book, several programs and projects have surfaced that do not accept the deficit hypothesis of the family and community. They have created spaces for transformative possibilities. In these programs, students and their families are not merely acquiring important skills but are realizing their own worth and potential power to change their own lives and the life and future of their community. The successes of other educators can inspire us to attempt what we sometimes think would not be possible.
