ABSTRACT

The stem /san-ahte-/ (thick-located) 'be tight' appears to be a special case. Even my oldest consultants seem to prefer san-dhte 'it is tight' and sen-dhte-k 'that which is tight,' where the /a/ of / -ahte-/ is unexpectedly stressable, to the expected forms san-te and sen-te-k, although these are also acceptable.
