ABSTRACT

The diversity of American religion pictured in the preceding chapters is even more evident as this last chapter is approached. The groups listed below do not fit into any of the major divisions of American religion as described in the preceding chapters. Included below not only are a number of unique perspectives to religion, but a variety of "non-religious" organizations for whom atheism functions much as religion does for believers. A number of mail order churches, those which offer ordination through the mail for a small fee to any who ask, which have little or no doctrinal position are also listed in this chapter. Finally, this last chapter includes a number of international movements which as yet have not developed a large diverse following in America (Zoroastrianism) or have been able to keep most of their followers in a single organization (Bahais, Unitarians).
