ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the discussion of the role of community colleges in countering conflict in multicultural societies encompasses an examination of community colleges in the United States, Canada, Malaysia, and South Africa. The ongoing reform in U.S. community colleges provides valuable suggestions for conflict resolution in a multicultural society. Community college models in Canada and Malaysia are examined because these multicultural societies have also experienced conflict because of ethnic and other diversity. Experiential knowledge gained from community colleges in the United States, Canada, and Malaysia is also considered for application to South African community college institutions, so that they may counter conflicts during their current transition period.
