In the period leading up to independence, Antonio Garcia Trevijano, the chief representative of "new capital" was the Maecenas of several political factions, before settling on Macias Nguerna. Political opponents were among the first to feel the vengeance of the regime. In November of 1968 a chief political opponent, Bonifacio Ondo Edu was imprisoned without trial, as were three of his political associates.
