In nearly all European countries, teacher education1 is in the midst of turbulent but most interesting times, with new challenges seen to be ahead. On the one hand, the results of the major changes in the past decades are being assessed, and, on the other hand, new challenges are being faced with respect to new demands for the teaching profession as well as recent developments in the European Community. In any event, in contrast to a couple of years ago, teacher education is in the picture once again.
