ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author deals with Eugene van Erven early in 1992 when one of his students at California State University, Los Angeles was on an ISEP exchange at Utrecht University where van Erven teaches in the American Studies program. He examines a description of the creation and completion of the multicultural, international project, On the Edge, and an evaluation of the process. In the late sixties and seventies, Augusto Boal was developing his “Theatre of the Oppressed” in Latin America. Its goal was to change the people, the spectators, into active participants in a process-oriented workshop. Participants became the playwrights, actors and directors. The completed educational video is called The Storytellers and focuses on the process of creating the play, On the Edge. Both the video and the script are primarily in English. In the fall of 1992, the Studium Generale, a cultural division of Utrecht University, in collaboration with the Intercultural Center RASA, created “The Edge of Existence” lecture series.
