External Environment

The previous sections of this book presented a historical perspective of higher education as well as a profile of small schools which have been successful in meeting the challenges of change. Their stories, while inspirational, are not complete without a deeper understanding of the conscious process of decision-making which must take place in order to achieve such success. The following two chapters will provide a framework for analyzing the external and internal variables which affect the health and welfare of all colleges and universities in today’s competitive environment and, consequently, their decision making process.
