Internal Environment: Organizational Challenges
The message from a small school president who recently led his institution through organizational change was clear and emphatic. Change is difficult, as it requires the organization to break routines which everyone has become comfortable and secure with over a long period of time. He related that everyone in the organization recognized that change was needed to survive, yet the resistance was staggering. The common cry was that change is fine, as long as it doesn’t affect me. As this particular college president found out, efforts to introduce systemwide change can lead to a death struggle. What dies is the comfort zone that people work themselves into when a part of any organization.
