ABSTRACT

THE PROBLEM of myth and his tory in their mutual relation according to Israelite-Jewish thought is of primary importance to the understanding of many questions in the Old Testament and Jewish religion and spiritual life. Thus far, however, this problem has not received a modern, comprehensive treatment in the light of our knowledge of ancient Israelite-Jewish thought in general, and of myth and history especially.l Nor does the present article aim at such an ambitious task, which would require much more space than is at my disposal here. The intention is only to present some general views on this difficult complex of ideas, at the same time trying to correct some wrong opinions which have been long accepted in a more or less articulated manner and have thus gained the position of long established scientific truths.
