ABSTRACT

Editor’s Preface: This study is drawn extensively from the last chapter (V B) of Professor Sanders’s Columbia University dissertation, although certain cuts and revisions were made by the author. I have adhered to the original English text from the dissertation wherever possible. In those passages where the German version deviates from the dissertation, I have simply translated what stands in the article as published in Archiv für Musikwissenschaft. All quotations from German sources are given in Professor Sanders’s own translations, excepting only those few instances where passages not present in the dissertation were inserted into the article. The footnote numbering in the journal is faulty due to the insertion of a note 35a after note 35; this anomaly has been corrected below, which, of course, means that all subsequent footnote numbers are greater by one. Professor Sanders has altered the title slightly from the original and has offered a number of additional corrections, emendations, and other suggestions in preparing the article for publication in its present form.
