ABSTRACT

This chapter examines relations between the women’s movement, women in political parties and the state in Norway. A general introduction to the Norwegian political system and economy is followed by a section on the development of the women’s movement in Norway and its different ideological currents. The next section examines women’s relations to the political parties, focusing on election campaigns and the quota system. This is followed by an analysis of the role of the state in developing gender equality machinery at both national and local level. The chapter concludes by assessing the strengths and weaknesses women’s current situation.
