Although the determination of the structure and interpretation of these sentences was certainly a goal in and of itself, the ultimate motivation for undertaking this study was to demonstrate that the conclusions which emerge from formally accounting for such data can be put in the form of hypotheses such in (3) and (4), which are of a more metatheoretical character.
