ABSTRACT
The Indian Claims Commission cases ofthe 1950s and mandates for cultural resource management studies have encouraged Indian identity in the late twentieth century. A number ofGabrielino have come forth. Three hundred and fifty people are actively involved in Gabrielino/Tongva affairs, but there are possibly 1,000 to 2,000 descendants, most ofwhom live in the Los Angeles area. Three separate Gabrielino groups are now active . They are the Gabrielino-Tongva TribaI Council, the IntertribaI Council of Tongva, and the Gabrielino Band of Mission Indians.
